Abortion
Personally, I believe abortion is one of the most horrible things mankind does to itself. No other animal I'm aware of on this earth willfully aborts their fetuses. Some grazing animals spontaneously abort after eating toxic plants, or may abort due to infections, but none do it intentionally other than man.
I can appreciate the dilemma a woman may have, finding herself pregnant and not wanting to be. Rape is a whole other category, but the majority of women seeking abortion were not raped (even "Roe" eventually recanted her rape claim). Seeking abortion to preserve a woman's health or survival is also a consideration.
Abortion can have any of several motivations - economic, irresponsibility (that was determined when the pregnancy occurred), immaturity, or for psychological reasons. I can see the rationale of a woman who finds herself pregnant and determines that there is no way she wants to have a baby. Her reasoning is entirely up to her. If, however, a woman seeks a second abortion, she is in serious need of sex education and responsibility, maybe even psychological intervention. I can understand one "accident," but the second is pure stupidity. It's hard to accept, but some women use abortion as a form of birth control.
Abortion has been a part of mankind since it was first attempted, using herbal abortifacients or physical abuse of the uterus. Wherever banned, those women who can afford to will travel elsewhere to get it done or find a local underground abortionist. The result is often harmful or fatal to the woman. Those who cannot will then complete the pregnancy and either keep the child (which may be forever treated as "unwanted"), or put the child up for adoption.
I truly believe that if all the people in this country who protest abortion would be equally proactive in signing up to adopt an unwanted child, more pregnant women might consider carrying to term. Protest is fine, but if you are sincere you will adopt a child.
So, here is a question for you. Is this tremendous need for abortion due to inadequate sex education in our schools, or is it due to a lack of moral and ethical education in our schools, i.e., religion?
Not to evade the issue, I am pro-choice for women who are really mentally unstable enough to be a parent, but also believe they should consider adoption. I am against the concept that we should accept a care-free society with no sense of responsibility that blithely allows this solution to sexual "accidents." With the easy access to several birth-control products today, the only excuse is ignorance - or just too sexy for their brains. Irresponsibility has consequences.
