Donald K. Allen for President

Top of the Week

The Democratic Debate last week was quite interesting.  John Edwards described our government as, “a system that does not work, that is broken, that is rigged and is corrupt; corrupted against the interest of most Americans and corrupted..... and corrupted for a very small, very powerful, very well-financed group.”  No kidding.  You know, that doesn’t apply just to our present President and his administration.  It applies to Congress and most other aspects of our government as well.  So will electing another professional politician change anything?  Senators Clinton and Biden both say they have 35 years’ experience in government.  Dodd has 26 years’ experience.  If our professional politicians have so much “government experience,” then why is our government in such bad shape?  Perhaps it truly IS time for a non-politician who can govern with common sense and reject lobbyists?

Giving driver’s licenses to illegal, or, I mean, “undocumented” workers was another potent question for the candidates.  Richardson said it improved safety on the highways and that those drivers were insured.  I don’t see that.  Going in for your driver’s license test is like someone going in for a job interview.  They are at their best on that day, but later you find out they’re not so good, after all.  Getting a driver’s license doesn’t make you a good or safe driver.  As far as insurance goes, that’s a joke.  There are many Americans who get automobile insurance in order to license a car, then pay one or two payments and let it lapse.  There are millions of uninsured drivers out there right now, and that’s why everyone else has to carry additional “uninsured drivers” coverage to pay for them when there’s an accident.  No illegal alien/immigrant worker should qualify for a driver’s license in any state, and it certainly won’t bring them “out of the shadows.”

Merit raises for teachers was a good question, too.  Absolutely there should be merit raises for teachers who excel at their work and who get additional teaching-related education themselves to improve.  That’s why I’m for privatizing our entire K-12 school systems and getting Federal Government meddling and mandating out of our schools.  That’s why I also propose an Opportunity Scholarship program to permit every high school graduate an open door to further education without incurring numbing debt in the process.  It will be the best investment our government ever made.
