Top of the Week

Lately I’ve been watching some of Frank Capra’s films, including “American Madness” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”  They are stories of honesty versus lies, integrity versus deceit, and community versus institution.  These were Depression-era films that were meant to help the American people understand that their problems were temporary, and that if they persevered and continued to work hard, things would get better.  Capra’s exceptional ability to portray humanity struggling against the hardships of life reached into everyone’s heart, and the messages are still relevant today.

One of the extra features of the “American Madness” DVD was commentary from Capra’s son and others who knew him well.  Regarding his films, Capra once said, “A demonstration of faith is worth all the money in the world.”  With the Republican and Democratic candidates raising millions of dollars for their election campaigns, and our news media repeatedly stating that it will take nearly 500 million dollars to “win” this election, I believe Capra’s quote is relevant to my situation as an independent.  I am hoping that 40 percent or more of Americans will demonstrate faith in me and what I stand for next November when they vote for integrity versus the duplicity of professional politicians.

Tomorrow, Christmas Day, I plan to watch one of America’s all-time classics, yet another of Frank Capra’s films – “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and look forward to a joyous New Year.  It will be a very interesting and exciting year for all of us.  We will have an opportunity to vote for real change in America or for more of the same thing we’ve had for decades.

May God bless you, everyone.
